Electrical Fault Finding FAQs

Frequent Questions by Customers

Unfortunately, this is a bit of a ‘how long is a piece of string’ situation. We can find some faults almost immediately, when others can take all day.

Here are a few things to consider and take note of which can make the fault finding process much quicker for the electrician (and keep costs down!):

– Which circuit/s are tripping
– What kind of circuit protection do you have (re-wirable, MCB, RCD, RCBO)
– What was happening when the circuit tripped
– What were the weather conditions (eg was it raining)?
– Any strange sounds or smells?
– Any new or malfunctioning appliances?

Many faults can’t be seen simply by looking and are only picked up during testing.

The most valuable thing here is information. If the electrician can quickly build up a picture of what’s happening/happened when the fault occurred it can make the fault finding process much quicker.

Fault finding in itself doesn’t tend to cause much in the way of disruption. However, depending on the extent of the fault found, the rectification of the fault may require lifting of floorboards or chasing walls

Fault finding starts at £85+VAT for the first hour and £55+VAT per hour after that
