What is a rewire?

A full rewire involves removing the old electrical accessories from the walls and running all new cables from the fuse board location through the fabric of the building to each new accessory. We would need to lift the carpets and floorboards in order to route the cables through the house. The walls would then need to be chased out to allow the cables to run up/down to light switches and socket outlets.

It is a lot easier, quicker and cheaper to carry out rewiring on an empty property.

Rewires FAQs

Frequent Questions by Customers

This depends on the condition and age of the current wiring. If there are traces of rubber, cloth or lead insulated cable, you are likely to require some form of rewire. It is also important to ensure there is good earthing.

If you are unsure, we would recommend having an EICR carried out to assess the condition of your electrical installation.

If your house is over 30 years old and has not been rewired in this time, it is likely to need some form or rewiring, whether that be partial or full. We would recommend having an EICR carried out to assess the condition of your electrical installation.

If the wiring is original then there is a good chance a rewire will be required. If there are traces of rubber insulated, fabric insulated or lead insulated cable, these are likely to have broken down over the years and will not be proving suitable protection. In some cases these older cables can crumble when touched, causing live conductors to be exposed and present a high risk of fire and electric shock.

It is unlikely that a house built in, or rewired after 1970 needs a rewire. It may however require a consumer unit replacement and possible upgrade to earthing and bonding.

When there is insufficient earthing or traces of rubber insulated, cloth insulated or lead insulated cable.
Or you may just wish to rewire in order to have more sockets/lights and in different locations.

A standard 3-bed house that is empty at the time of rewire would take between 1 and 2 weeks to rewire depending on the specifications, building fabric and layout.

Depending on the specifications, building fabric and layout a rewire of a 3 bedroom home would usually cost between £3500-£5500

We would highly recomend carrying out a rewire before moving into a property. It can be a very messy, dusty process and working around a lived-in home is very difficult and could be quite costly.
