Why do I need to change my fuseboard / consumer unit?

You should consider changing your fuse board if your current fuse board is not providing suitable protection or find circuits are tripping regularly.

If you are unsure, we would recommend having an EICR carried out to determine the condition of your electrical installation.

Fuseboard / Consumer Unit FAQs

Frequent Questions by Customers

A fuse board or consumer unit is an enclosure that houses the fuses that feed each circuit around your home. These are typically located under staircases or in the main entrance hallway to your property.

You should consider having your fuse board replaced if you find circuits are tripping regularly or if there are any visible signs of damage to the enclosure (cracks or thermal damage)

If you are unsure, we would recommend having an EICR carried out to determine the condition of your electrical istallation.

A fuse board change typically takes between 2-3 hours to replace the consumer unit. It would then take another 2-4 hours to carry out testing and certification.

A qualified and accredited electrician belonging to a recognised governing body such as the NICEIC.

– The electric supply is isolated, following correct isolation procedures.
– The old fuse board is then removed from the wall and the new consumer unit fitted in its place.
– If required the main tails and earthing is then upgraded.
– The old circuits are then connected to the new RCBO’s
– Surge protection is installed
– We then carry out ‘dead testing’ to ensure everything is connected correctly.
– We then carry out live and functional testing.
– Then the certificate is completed and the building control notification sent.
– We will then issue you with the Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and Building control notification.

Typically we would require the power to be switched off for 3-4 hours. Other than this, most of the work is carried out at the fuse board location. After installation of the new consumer unit we would need access to all rooms in order to carry out testing.

A consumer unit replacement of an 8-way fuse board would cost approximately £550+VAT – This includes all materials, labour, testing, certification and building notification.

For all consumer unit changes we use a metal-clad consumer unit enclosure, RCBO protection for all circuits and surge protection.
