Underfloor Heating Installation FAQs

Frequent Questions by Customers

Underfloor heating can be used on its own or in conjunction with additional heating systems (like radiators) and is there to warm a desired area of your home. As the name suggests, underfloor heating is installed beneath your floor.

Underfloor heating comes in 2 main forms:

  1. Electric systems – use electrical cables to generate heat
  2. Water systems – uses pipes set in the floor and can be connected to any heat source.

Underfloor heating runs at a lower temperature than radiators so is usually cheaper to run.

You may need underfloor heating if you are having an extension and have no wall space for a radiator.

Alternatively it might be because your floors are made of a material that is particularly difficult to heat up, i.e. tiles, stone, concrete etc.

Underfloor heating can be quick to install. For example, a bathroom using an electric heating system can be completed in a few hours.

The time will ultimately vary depending on the complexity of the job, the type of system you require (electric or water) and the size of the space.

In general though, this is often quicker to install than a traditional radiator system.

If you require a water system, the job should be completed by a competent installer. The work does not legally need to be completed by a certified gas engineer. However, when laying water pipes in the floor, there is always the risk of leaks if not installed correctly which could be costly to rectify.

For electric underfloor heating, we recommend using a qualified electrician.

Firstly a site visit would be carried out to ascertain what system would best suit your needs.

For small, simple jobs (usually 1 room) this can be achieved by purchasing a prefabricated installation kit.

For larger projects like extensions or complete houses, a planned drawing will be sent to the chosen underfloor heating supplier and they will design the system for you and a detailed plan will be issued to the installer to follow.

The installation will be carried out before the flooring is laid. For a wet system, the pipes will run to a manifold.

All systems are tested before flooring is laid.

The levels of disruption are highly dependant on the type of installation, the size of floor space and type of house.

For example, if you require a full wet underfloor heating system to replace traditional radiators, this would likely be a large undertaking as all floors, doors and skirting would need to be removed to complete.

However, a simple underfloor heating system in a single room, might cause very little disruption.

One of our engineers would be able to calculate the extent of disruption during a site survey. Please get in touch for a free quote.
